The Royal College of Surgeons and Surgical Specialty Associations have published commissioning guidance on Orthognathic Procedures, which Bazian provided a literature search for.
The project, funded by the Department of Health’s QIPP Right Care team, involves producing a portfolio of guidance for commissioners of surgical services to support the commissioning of high value care and to reduce unwarranted variation in services.
Without appropriate orthognathic treatment, people with dento-facial deformities can experience functional problems (such as difficulty chewing) and psycho-social disadvantage. Over 2718 orthognathic surgical procedures were carried out in England in 2012 and the guidance includes a high value pathway for referral, treatment and post-treatment follow-up.
The recommendations of the Guideline Development Group are underpinned by a detailed literature review and follow the high quality processes required by NICE Accreditation (to find out more, read our news story on NICE Accreditation).
